2014 SCMA Country Music Person of the Year and 2013 CBC Saskatchewan Future 40 award winner, the Irish-born Stephen Maguire is one of the most diverse entertainers in our province. Recent highlights include being a featured artist on The 1861 Project alongside country legend Marty Stuart and a 25-date tour with Memory Lane: A Tribute to the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. He won a National Philanthropy Award and SCMA Humanitarian Award for his extraordinary work with the Red Cross, including flood relief concerts and Imagine No Bullying provincials schools tour. The Heritage Festival of Saskatoon is thrilled Stephen is able to join us for this special performance. Northern Saskatchewan’s In With the Old seamlessly combine raw talent and prairie camaraderie with a passion and respect for the music from the past. Young and dedicated, they take a unique approach to memorable old tyme music through gifted harmonies and infectious songwriting all told through a small town perspective.
3 pm Multicultural Performance
A Multicultural Performance not to be missed! The Norwegian Cultural Dancers, the German Junior Folk Dancers, and the Saskatoon International Folkdance Club will perform at this year’s Heritage Festival of Saskatoon.
Norwegian Cultural Dancers
The Saskatoon Norwegian school dancers have performed in and around Saskatoon for the past 30 years. It began with a children’s group and now this is the 3rd consecutive year of the adult folkdance group.
Saskatoon German Junior Folk Dancers
The German Junior Folk Dancers are celebrating their 17th anniversary as an independent Folkdance group in Saskatoon this year. Colorful and lively, their dancers perform throughout the province and have become a tradition at many old and new multicultural festivals.
Their repertoire includes over 40 different dances that have been handed down through the years, not only just in Germany, but throughout Europe. Some of the most fun dances are the folkdances that bring history to life by telling stories of old ways of labour, life and courtship.
The costumes the dancers are wearing represent heritage dress from the north and north-central areas of Germany, with the headdress being a significant part of it. Young girls usually wear flowers in their hair, with the long ribbons attached, while the married women would make their own special cap, depending on the tradition of where they live. Instructor Amanda is wearing a gold cap fashioned after the style in the northern Mecklenburg area.
The group meets once a week to practice, and takes part in numerous events throughout the year. They especially enjoy dancing as part of multicultural festivals to celebrate the music and colorful dance along with the many nations who are also keeping alive their heritage dancing here in Saskatchewan. As a very unique cultural learning opportunity, the group has travelled to Germany and Austria to see where some of these dances come from.
Dancers range in age from 3 to 16 and are excited to be a part of this year’s Heritage Festival.
Saskatoon International Folkdance Club
The Saskatoon International Folkdance Club focuses on teaching and dancing a variety of folk dances for enjoyment and recreation in a casual atmosphere. The Club, located at the Albert Community Center, meets weekly and welcomes new members throughout the year.
Along with good physical exercise, folk dancing also provides cultural enrichment which helps us to appreciate the heritage of our ancestors. You are invited to discover the world, communing through the common language of dance.
3:30 pm Cash Back: performing a Tribute to Johnny Cash
In the spring of 1955 Johnny Cash walked into the legendary Sun Recording Studio in Memphis Tennessee. The music world was never the same!
Cash Back performs the music of one of the world’s greatest music icons through authentic versions of songs that made him legendary, ranging from the fifties to the ninety’s. Our show consists of songs and stories(including Gospel) of Johnny Cash and of some of the people that were closely associated with him throughout his life and career such as June Carter Cash, The Carter Family, The Tennessee Three, Carl Perkins, “Cowboy”Jack Clement and Sam Phillips to name a few. Cash Back respectfully and lovingly reference the late, great Man In Black’s early Columbia and Sun Records sound. They try to keep the Cash sound as authentic as possible while adding their own flavor to the mix. Cash Back draws from a large repertoire of songs either written and/or performed by Cash, including the June Carter Cash duets. Cash Back also pays tribute to the Carter Family whose music was so influential and who became an integral part of Johnny Cash’s life.
Members of Cash Back have been playing music in the amateur/semi-pro field for many years. After taking several years off from playing they decided that they wanted to start playing again but this time they wanted to do something different. Johnny Cash music had always been a part of their repertoire and actually was Dave’s biggest influence in music in the sixties when he was learning to play. Doing a Johnny Cash tribute seemed like the perfect fit, so in 2004 they took their tribute show on the road. It is met with great enthusiasm and has received many accolades along the way. The Tribute Show that Cash Back delivers appeals to anyone from 9 to 90 and showcases the group’s reverent and genuine love of Johnny Cash’s music.
